The chemical element hydrogen, discovered by the English chemist Henry Cavendish, has
occupied mankind since the 18th century. But for lighting and heating, people quickly switched to
conventional electricity and natural gas. Researchers in the automotive and aerospace industries
have been experimenting with hydrogen for several decades. Will the ambition to create a
sustainable, global energy system finally help hydrogen achieve a breakthrough? Many countries
are already subsidizing hydrogen projects to the tune of billions of dollars with the goal of
achieving “net-zero” emissions plans. Hydrogen will also play a key role in implementing the
European Green Deal.
